What is Mothproofing?

Wool fibers can be mothproofed using a urea-based compound. This process is safe and simple however somewhat time consuming and thus, usually not offered by the wool fiber market. You can purchase a mothproofing agent at Hillcreek Fiber Studios and treat any wool in your stash. A waterbath/heat process is involved, so some fiber artists add the compound during the dye process.

Basically, the mothproofing treatment changes the "recognition site" on the wool fibers so that the wool moth does not recognize the fiber as wool. Really cool! The results are permanent with no exposure of the wool fibers to toxic chemicals and no residues or changes in the appearance or felting ability of the wool.
